The Value of One Day (and how to keep from wasting it)

Surprised man holding money

You check your phone shortly after waking tomorrow morning.

There’s a text from your bank that says,

“Someone deposited $1440 in your checking account last night.  It’ll only be there today.  Whatever you don’t use will be removed at midnight.”

What would you do?

If it happened to me, I would think, “OK, this isn’t small change.  I’ve got some options:”

  • I could spend it.
  • I could save it.
  • I could invest it.
  • I could give it.

But there’s one thing I wouldn’t do: ignore it.

I can’t think of anyone who would say, “I know it’s a lot of money, but I don’t feel like going to the ATM.”

Would you?

That’s exactly what happens every day to each of us every single day.

But it’s not dollars.

It’s minutes.

Every day, we’re given 1440 minutes – a fresh deposit that disappears when the day ends.

At the start of the day, we decide what to do with those minutes.

If we wait until the end of the day, those choices are made for us by default.

The good news is that it happens again tomorrow.

And the next day.

And the day after that.

But not forever.

How to Invest Your Time Wisely

So, we’ve got 1,440 minutes today (less, unless we’re reading this at midnight).  What do we need to know to make good use of those minutes?

  1. Time is limited.  One day, those deposits will stop.  So it’s important to make sure we use each day’s minutes wisely.
  2. There are no days that do not count.  Ignore today’s opportunities, and they’re gone for good.
  3. Our daily choices will shape our future.
    • Good choices today pay dividends.
    • Bad choices today make withdrawals.
    • No choices gives our future away.
  4. Nobody becomes an overnight success or failure.  Both are the result of daily deposits and withdrawals.
  5. You can start fresh today.  One good choice moves your future forward.

Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow isn’t here yet.

Worrying about either one only distracts you from being intentional about today.

So, how will you use your 1,440 minutes today?

If you receive these articles by email, you’re going to see a few changes coming – especially in the next few weeks.  I’ve got an updated book coming out in about a month, and another one that I’m writing now.  I’m also changing my approach to social media to make it more focused on you – and the things you’ve been asking for.

So, I’ll be connecting more often during this transition.  I’ll send a series of short emails to let you know what’s coming – and give you a chance to shape what it looks like.  In the future, you’ll hear from me more regularly than in the past, and more personally.  I’ll make it easier for us to connect in real time as well.

Stay tuned – I’ll fill you in on the details soon!

Mike
